A new Margaritaville Resort complex is being built just across the Intracoastal Canal from The Wharf. The 83-acre development will feature a central Waterfront District with retail and dining options; a large “amenity deck” featuring a lazy river, pools and water slides; and single-family cottages, luxury waterfront condos and hotel-style lodging. Its first phase is expected to open for business in 2027.

What happens when you take a couple of Jimmy Buffett’s original Coral Reefers and add a few of the current Band Members for a live concert? Answer: You get a fun and really good musical performance. We wandered up to the Sarasota Film Festival to catch a showing of John Cunningham’s new music documentary about Jimmy Buffett’s first Coral Reefer Band which is an awesome deep dive into the formation of the Band in 1970s and early 80s.
After the movie, we headed outside for a very special Concert. Original band members Roger Bartlett and Keith Sykes were joined by Nadirah Shakoor, Tina Gullickson and Doyle Grisham along with Melissa May and Roger’s band for an awesome Coral Reefer Reunion Show.

Eager to capitalize — or at the very least, reclaim — what was clearly an opportunity, he built a store using lumber he found under a friend’s house. For obvious reasons (it was his breakthrough song, and probably most popular) he planned to call the store “Margaritaville.”
Great idea, but not so simple, when he learned restaurant chain Chi-Chi’s had trademarked the word “Margaritaville” for a drink special.
